favorite childhood sweets
I was catching up with my google reader Tuesday morning and saw a post from Serious Eats about favorite childhood sweets.
My brother loved my mother’s blondies, which are basically chocolate chip cookies in brownie shape.
I loved when my family made sand tarts for Christmas. Sand tarts, an Amish treat, are kind of like sugar cookies only rolled extremely thin, then using cookie cutters, cut into different shapes, brushed with egg and sprinkled with either colored sugars or cinnamon & crushed walnuts (that combo only went on the horse shape LOL). The other shapes were more Christmas-y: Christmas trees, stars, bells and of course Santa! Wish I had a picture of this! I looked through flickr and couldn’t find anything that came close. The picture on this blog is close to what they’d look like.
I loved shoofly pie, another Amish treat (my Mother lived in Lancaster, PA til she was 15 or so, and shared her love of all kinds of Amish foods with us).
And I loved my Mom’s peanut butter cookies, which were my Dad’s favorite.

Another thing I liked, as a snack after school, was a Ring Ding (who remembers those?) with a baggie of potato chips. I used to smash up the chips and twist the baggie til they’d come out like frosting. Gross, eh?
So what was your favorite childhood sweet(s)?

I loved Ring Dings. And Devil Dogs. And Blondies (now I have to find a recipe; haven’t had those in ages). And pizzelles. Oh, and Betty Crocker Snakin’ Cake. Remember that?

I loved Ding Dongs. Especially smoothing out the foil wrapper afterwards.

I used to make those Christmas cookies too! I love blonde brownies – in fact the last batch I made was delish. That was last winter… Since then I’ve sort of given up sugar, but I really want to bake. Perhaps when the weather gets colder…

Spritz Christmas cookies are such a lovely, buttery treat… and fudge… and I think I just gained 3 pounds thinking about them!

I was a fan of the chocolate chip cookie–but also the Twinkie which could only be eaten at someone else’s house as my mother would never purchase such an abomination.

Mom’s mocha-upside down with soft serve from the DQ! Then there was mom’s lemon meringue pie – her pastry was to die for. Peanut butter cookies, butter tarts (and that says a lot as I abhor cooked raisins), shortbread, Elizabeth’s Favourite Cake too many! I think I just put on 10 lbs.
