whispers
From Cafe Writing: Option Two: Pick Three: “Pick at least three of the following nine words, and write a paragraph, scene, flash-fic, essay, blog entry or poem using them (It’s fine to change tenses, or pluralize if you want to, but please bold the words you choose): awoke, chamber, distant, ghost, house, listen, still, whisper, window”
She awoke suddenly and completely, SURE she’d heard a whisper. This was an old house, after all…and it was probably nothing more than its joints settling or stairs creaking. Barely breathing, keeping still, she strained to listen…there! She heard it again, so faint, as if it were a distant memory. She got out of bed and walked softly over to the window to open the blind and let in the light of the full moon, illuminating her chamber and chasing the night-time shadows away. There was a rocking chair by the window and she sat in it for awhile, listening…waiting. Finally, she saw him, the ghost who haunted her dreams, her lover who had vanished years ago and she smiled and went back to bed, knowing he’d join her there, to whisper to her into the deepest stretches of the night.
