The Wine’s Drunk, But the Memories Remain

Come play along at the new Thursday-13 Hq!
This was originally a prompt over at PROMPTuesdays quite some time ago…somehow it got lost in my drafts and is now being recycled as a story in 13 lines.
1. In June of 2001 my friend Sandy and I flew down on a Friday to visit Grace, a woman I used to work with when I lived in Colorado.
2. She was living in the Orlando area, not far from the happiest place on earth, and Sandy and I were looking forward to going there with Grace and her beau the next day.
3. Unfortunately, that evening I drank most of a bottle of red wine during a spirited game of Apples to Apples and wasn’t feeling my best on Saturday, so I stayed behind.
4. I had called an old boyfriend when I arrived…we hadn’t spoken for some time but he was always much on my mind.
5. He returned the phone call Saturday and we made plans to meet for lunch.
6. As was our habit, we never really made it to lunch and checked in to a hotel instead, where I didn’t let the fact I had a huge hangover affect what we did all day.
7. We made love over and over and over again, talking about what had happened between us and how much we missed each other.
8. He admired my new tattoo, which he’d never seen before.
9. And didn’t mention the extra weight I’d put on since the last time we’d seen each other.
10. I cried, he cried and he cursed himself for being stupid, for marrying the wrong woman, for many things.
11. He told me how he thought of me all the time, even, once or twice, accidentally calling his wife by my name.
12. I cried when it was time to leave him and we made plans to get together the next day.
13. We never spoke again.

Oh boy. I hope everyone came out of it unscathed.

Oh, man. This really resonates with me. I lead a different life now, but my life is full of similar experiences. They are bitter and sweet, both. They are both a source of pride and something I hold secret. Memories of these experiences inspire a kind of flushed, voluptuous embarrassment and shyness.
Wow. I don’t know whether I could write about such experiences with the candor that you do. You are fearless and brave!

Bravo, dahlink! I love it.
I love 4 and 5! (I need to do 5). I do a lot of my food prep like you do, too.
Happy TT!
I’m up at both Thornesworld

I hope you’ll stop by!

Better than Disneyworld any time. I feel so bad for you both.
This post makes me feel less shy about mentioning an LSD trip in yesterday’s post. The real stuff is always the best. Or is this fiction?

Gorgeous bit of flash fiction here – um…if it is in fact, fiction.
Bittersweet. Brevity. Brava!

What is wrong with me? The part that jumped out at me the most was the Apples to Apples game!
February 20th, 2009 at 9:04 am
Wow! Great story in only 13 lines.
February 20th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Nice story. This ex-boyfriend of yours reminds me of one of mine, actually. Only I am glad I will never see the guy again, even though the sex with him was fantastic.
February 21st, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Loved the story or was it from a page in your memoir?
February 22nd, 2009 at 3:44 am
I don’t see any clarification on if this is true or false, so I shall choose to believe this is 1) true, and 2) your ex looks like Val Kilmer in Top Gun. Fine, indeed.

That was some story! I’ve never heard of Apples to Apples until now. I’m glad to hear it didn’t stop you from enjoying yourself on Saturday.
