seven tastes or scents that define Autumn
From Cafe Writing: Option Six: Seven Words: “So, give me seven tastes or scents that define autumn for you.”
1. Burning leaves: Not so common nowadays, but it was something I smelled every weekend in Autumn when I was a kid.
2. The air changes in the fall…the weather turns cool and everything just smells so clear!!!
3. Fairs! Mingled odors of horses, apple crisp, hotdogs, fried dough, hay…you know it’s fall when the Topsfield Fair happens!
4. Pumpkins! Not only do they make wonderfully spooky carvings that you can illuminate from within, they are also great vessels for soups or stews…talk about cooking green! I made pumpkin gratin today, as a matter of fact and it was fantastic! If anyone would like the recipe, please ask. And let’s not forget, this is the time of year pumpkin beer appears! Delish!
5. Cinnamon! To some, it might be a Christmas scent, but it always makes me think of autumn. Must be all those apples.
6. Mushrooms also make me think of the fall. I used straw mushrooms in a recipe this weekend, oh so good!
7. Apples! Ever smelled an orchard in the fall? Amazing! Fresh juicy apples, cider, pies, crisps, caramel apples…the more tart the better, in my opinion.

I didn’t even think to add the scent of cool earth and bulbs to my list, so I’m tickled that you included mushrooms.

I would love to have your recipe for pumpkin gratin.
Fall totally means mushrooms to me. The supermarkets are full of them now. I have to say I do love Japanese mushrooms in all their varieties.
