Max and Wolf…or…paying for the Vet’s kid’s colleges
Max had an appointment with the vet this morning to get his teeth cleaned…and P.U. did he need it! They had to pull a tooth…not a major one, and his preparatory blood work was fine (they check kidney function, etc., on older dogs, and Max just turned 11). I’ll pick him up around 5:30.
Wolf ended up going along to the vet’s with Max and me this morning; he had another seizure at 4 am this morning. He doesn’t have a flailing-type seizure…he just freezes up and only his eyes move. He looks at me like…HELP!!! So I asked the vet to take a look at him. She listened to his heart & lungs (sounds great!), checked his temp (normal), gave him a good feel up (feels ok), and he even lost 1/2 pound. He does have some type of skin infection on his belly (antibiotics and spray), and his left eye is red again (ointment; you can see that it’s a bit red in this picture). She took some blood and is going to do a thyroid panel to check and see if it’s a bit sluggish, given how hard it is for him to lose weight. There’s no test for epilepsy, so it’s a matter of elimation. Other things can cause seizures as well, such as Lyme Disease (which he has) and Hypoglycemia (he was really hungry last night, possibly he didn’t get enough to eat).
So…I’m guessing it will be close to $1,000.00 tonight for both of them. Care to take a guess? The person that comes closest will win something…heck, something good should come out of this!!!

I say $739. Just because. I pretty much pulled that number out of my ass.
I love when you post pics of your babies. They’re beautiful.
My dog Cleo had epilepsy-the seizures didn’t last long. We’d just pull her on our lap and hold her till it was over. Then she’d sort of look up at me and be like “hey, how’d I get here?” Then she’d lick me on the nose and all was well again. What was interesting is that our other dog, Lady, always seemed to know Cleo was about to seize. She’d come over and and start pawing and crying and we learned to go immediately to Cleo and check her out. Those dogs trained us really well!
Hope your babies are okay.

Oh dear.
I can empathize. We went through so many high vet bills with our Lab when he had heart worms, and then with our cat when her kidneys failed. Seemed like we were writing checks for hundreds of dollars every time checked out. I’ll venture a guess and say $780.00 and hope you get out way under $1000.00.
The seizures would frighten me. I hope he’s okay!

Ill say $980 because that’s what it just cost me to get my car serviced. AAARRGGHHH

It cost us $1100 to get Goku fixed when he was having bladder issues a couple months ago. They kept him over the weekend.
Max’s mouth sure looks tidy in there.
Poor Wolf! Hopefully they’ll find out what is causing the seizures. ((()))
~I guess I’ll guess $627.00.~

I’m guessing $2000! I empathize. I pay much more for my Trixie’s health care than my own. These pictures are astounding. Such expressions! Usually when I get out my camera, Trixie thinks it’s a treat and runs staight at it, so the moment is lost.

My guess would be $825 – Which is a wild guess pulled out of the same place as izzybella found her numbers!

Janet ~ my Murphy has been having seizures for years now. It seems as if stress brings them on. Like when we moved, when I get a new puppy, when one of puppies go back, when we have lots of company, anything different. He has the same look as you mentioned, like please make this stop, than he is very confused when it finally ends. Luckly it’s been several months since his last one. We wish Wolf well.
My vet quoted me $800.00 for teeth cleaning, an office visit of $48.00, meds, etc, an easy $1000.00 +

I hear ya on the cost at the Vets! I want to claim my Vets as dependents!
Hope Wolf and Max are okay.

Survey says— $879.23, random, I know.
Man, the things we do for our babies. Why can’t we insure them under our medical plans as dependents?! Hope everyone is OK.

Shoot – I was hoping to hear how it turned out. They are both in my prayers.

Gaaahhh! It’s as bad as people doctor bills, isn’t it! (And you know I speak from experience, although from what you’re describing I think your vet charges even more than mine!) I’m going to guess $888.88.

I will toss in a guess of $712…am I close? I sure do hope Wolf is ok no matter what the cost!

Montana had seizures often and by a process of elimination, we traced it to pig ears — can you believe it. she loved those treats but as soon as we stopped giving them to her the seizures stopped. Seizures can be really scary too. Totally make my Mom cry because she didn’t know what to do for her

Ouch. I love my meows like babies, but the whole vet bill thing is always insane. Especially the whole teeth cleaning and pre-blood thing. I am scared to even venture a guess, but it will be interesting to hear. Why is it I didn’t become a vet? I love pets and I love dollars…. I hope it’s not as bad as any of us think it will be. eek.
May 7th, 2008 at 1:48 am
ouch. i’m thinking $932.50.

Okay, it’s not funny, but it is. Can only move his eyes and says “Help me mom”. It made me snort. Does that make me a bad person?
Vet bills are ridiculous.
I’m going with $888. Now watch, someone will “Price Is Right” me and go with $889.

Eeek, I have to take Wolfie to the vet soon and ugh I dread the cost.
May 8th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
Geez I hope it’s not that much! But I have heard teeth whitening is very expensive. Glad both doggies are okay though!
May 8th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
Oh, I hear ya. I swear between my girls and all of my family’s pets, I have no doubt that we paid for our Vet’s brand new cabin. I hope Max and Wolf are okay. And I hope you made it out of there for way under $1,000… maybe something like $750?
My Dad’s dog, Hunter, had epileptic seizures at least once a month for his whole life. It was always a little freaky to witness, but there was nothing we could really do about them. We just sat with him to make sure he didn’t fall over or hurt himself or whatever until he would finally relax. Then he’d get up and be his normal wild, loud self again.

$800. for teeth cleaning!!@ I just read Pup’s comment. whoa.
When I was a new vet asst. back in the 80’s (oh God, I just dated myself), a client came in with a doberman that needed his teeth cleaned, and after putting the dog under anesthetic, the vet handed me a screwdriver and told me use it on the tougher bits of tartar. Yes, you read that right. I was shocked! Dentistry sure has come a long way in the animal world.
Buddy is diabetic and he’s had a few seizures brought on by hypoglycemia, which happens when his insulin gets too low. It’s a horrible thing to watch, just awful.
If Wolf’s seizure is caused by hypoglycemia, ask the vet if it’s ok to give him Karo Corn Syrup when he starts to get “woozy” and out of it. That will bring his sugar up instantly, but you’ll have to make sure he eats a meal and gets a protein afterward to stablize it. I usually rub it on his nose and on his gums to get him to “focus” and start licking for more, and then I pour some in a bowl for him to lick. Then we progress to his food, and so on.
In any event, it’s an awful feeling to see them go through it… good luck to you and Wolf!

Ooooh, I’m’ so sorry to hear about Wolf’s seizures..now I’m worried. Please give him hugs for me and Karina!
